CARB Compliant Pressure Washers

Pressure Washing In A Future of Zero Emissions

With California leading the way in legislation, the future banning of gas-powered pressure washers is inevitable.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) reports a total of 16.7 million small engines in the state of California compared to 13.7 million passenger vehicles, drastically affecting emissions. Recently signed legislation aims to ban the sale of gas-powered small off-road engines (SORE), including pressure washers, by 2028.

Small Off-Road Engine (SORE) Regulations

Small off-road engines (SORE) are spark-ignition engines rated at or below 19 kilowatts (25 HP). Engines in this category are primarily used for lawn, garden, and other small off-road equipment.* Recent studies show 20% of California SORE equipment includes gas-powered industrial pressure washers, accounting for a substantial percentage of smog-forming emissions.

With the proliferation of hybrid and fully electric cars, smog-forming emissions from SORE are projected to surpass and more than double those of passenger cars by 2031.

The Future of Pressure Washer Emission Standards

Emission standards for industrial pressure washers manufactured in 2028 will be more stringent than the existing standards by 40-90%. The second phase will be implemented starting in 2028, when the emission standards for generators and large pressure washers will be zero.

Who Do These Laws Affect?

All Landa industrial gas pressure washers are affected by the 19 kW (25 HP) power cap imposed by California legislation. The ban only affects sales to the state of California; however, other states have begun to adopt similar regulations and are predicted to follow in California’s footsteps within the next 10 years. Effective immediately, compliance with this legislation is required by law for all California residents and business owners. Failure to comply could result in a fine or criminal action.

Is Your Pressure Washer CARB Compliant?

Your pressure washer’s engine determines if it is allowed to be purchased in the state of California. We have made it easy to identify which Honda and Vanguard engines are and are not CARB compliant above. All Landa pressure washers equipped with a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard engine are CARB compliant. Additionally, all electric powered Landa pressure washers are CARB compliant since they are not powered by gasoline or diesel fuel.
